Lester D.R. Thompson, MD
​Dr. Lester Thompson has more than 29 years of experience in Head and Neck and Endocrine Pathology, starting at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP) in Washington, DC, and continuing as a consultant pathologist in southern California. He has over 380 published articles, has published 12 books, is the editor of Head and Neck Pathology journal, is the Series Champion for the International Collaboration on Cancer Reporting for head and neck and endocrine organs; and is an editor for the 5th edition WHO Blue Books on Head and Neck Tumors and Endocrine Organ Tumors.
With more than 29 years of experience in Head and Neck and Endocrine Pathology, Dr. Lester D. R. Thompson worked for a decade at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (Washington, DC), in Otorhinolaryngic-Head and Neck Pathology, Endocrine Pathology and Immunohistochemistry (Chief of the divisions). He has continued as a consultant and research pathologist in the ensuing years. He has maintained a prodigious research effort (over 380 papers); serves on the editorial boards of many peer reviewed scientific journals; teaches at national and international conferences; serves as an active member of a number of national and international societies (including past President of the North American Society of Head and Neck Pathology); is an active member of the College of American Pathologists Protocol Committee (among others); Series Champion for the International Collaboration on Cancer Reporting for head and neck and endocrine organs (www.iccr.org); and collaborated on the three most recent editions (2003; 2017; 2022) of the World Health Organization’s classifications for Head and Neck Tumors and Endocrine Organ Tumors, while also a member of the Editorial Advisory Board for the WHO. He is the editor of Head and Neck Pathology journal. He has published 12 books, including 3 AFIP Fascicles. His interests include travel, cooking, weight lifting, wine connoisseurship and stain glass creation.
